DescriptionWillie Carmichael's involvement in the Commonwealth Games stretches all the way back to the 1934 London Empire Games where he was Manager of the Scottish Wrestling team and also a judge in the Wrestling competition. In 1948 he was appointed Vice-Chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland. He served as Chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland from 1950-1955 and Secretary from 1956-1979. He was also appointed Scotland Team Manager for the 1954 Vancouver Games. It had always been his dream to bring the Games to Scotland. He realised this ambition in 1970 when he was appointed Director of Organisation for the Edinburgh Games. Full details of Carmichael's role in the planning and organisation of the 1970 Edinburgh Games can be found in Commonwealth Games Scotland Archive (ref. CG/2/9/1, administrative papers of the 1970 Commonwealth Games). He was made O.B.E. in 1971 for his services to the Commonwealth Games and served on the Council of the Commonwealth Games Federation from 1974-1975.
